Project Background:

Project Name: Data Center Interconnect (DCI) and Server Upgrade Initiative

Timeline: 2025 Q3 – 2026 Q2

Technical Context:

The rapid adoption of AI/ML workloads, 5G backhaul services, and hyperscale cloud applications created unprecedented data traffic growth within Global Cloud Services Inc.’s (GCS) Singapore data center, a key Asia-Pacific hub. The existing network architecture, designed around legacy 10G/40G Ethernet, was approaching its theoretical throughput limits, causing congestion in core-spine links and impacting service-level agreements (SLAs) for latency-sensitive applications.

A technology audit revealed a heterogeneous mix of equipment from multiple vendors (primarily Cisco Nexus and Arista 7000 series switches) deployed over several hardware generations. The core challenge was to design a scalable, high-bandwidth upgrade path that could:

  1. Integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure without a disruptive “forklift” replacement.
  2. Support a smooth migration from 100G to 200G/400G and eventually 800G optics, future-proofing the investment.
  3. Maintain low power consumption and high port density, which are critical for data center operation costs (OPEX) and space utilization.

Business Context:

GCS was facing competitive pressure to offer higher-tier services, such as AI training clusters and real-time big data analytics platforms. The network performance limitations directly threatened their ability to secure and retain enterprise clients in the financial technology and e-commerce sectors. The project was initiated as a strategic infrastructure modernization program, approved by the CTO office, with clear ROI targets tied to enabling new revenue-generating services and reducing the cost per gigabit of transported data.
